Our Offices     Acupuncture and herbal medicine are the two main components of a system of medicine called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Recent research has shown acupuncture to be highly effective in treating a broad range of health problems. This research has also revealed some of the physiological mechanisms through which it works. The World Health Organization of the United Nations (WHO) now recognizes over 40 medical conditions that can be treated effectively by acupuncture. The National Institutes of Health released a consensus statement on acupuncture in 1999 that details several conditions effectively treated by acupuncture.

Recent studies have demonstrated some of the mechanisms through which acupuncture achieves results.

Acupuncture causes the release of several naturally occurring substances in the body that facilitate healing and maintain the body's internal balance. One of these naturally occurring substances is endorphin; which helps eliminate pain, elevate mood and promote deep relaxation. Another substance released is cortisone, which reduces inflammation.

Acupuncture has also been shown to improve circulation throughout the body, increase oxygen levels in the brain, stimulate the body's immune response and influence the bioelectrical activity of the body.

Within the TCM system, acupuncture is understood to enhance and rebalance the flow of energy through the body. Disease and pain are perceived as disruptions in the flow of energy, from causes such as trauma, external disease causing agents, or improper diet or lifestyle. Acupuncture can increase the overall level of energy, or "unblock" the energy to reestablish its proper circulation.

Our acupuncture needles are sterilized, disposable and made of solid stainless steel. The needles are very fine and cause very little to no pain when inserted into the skin. After inserting the needle, the practitioner may twirl the needle until the patient feels a sensation of soreness, numbness or heaviness. The practitioner may then leave the patient to rest, stimulate the needles, or attach them to an electronic stimulator. The electronic stimulator allows for continuous stimulation of the needles over a period of time.

Acupuncture is an ancient form of healing that effectively treats many physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Acupuncture is also excellent for preventive and maintenance care. If you have questions about how acupuncture might help you, please call us at our Menlo Park or San Mateo clinic.
